This post is titled “The Road to Alaska…on the Alaska Marine Highway System.” However bizarre this may appear, the name of the ferry service reflects the course through the Inside Passage and its use, for all intents and purposes, as a Marine Highway. And all along, I thought it was just a poor man’s cruise!
Taking a vehicle the size of the Wander onto the ferry, however, wasn’t exactly cheap. With it, myself, and an outside state roomette for the four day, five night journey from Bellingham, WA, to Whittier, AK, cost just over $4000, meals not included. Luckily, I had food in the RV, because it would have been very expensive to eat what I wound up eating on the boat. I am not sure if it is like that on most cruises or not; this was my first. Holy cow — I felt hungry and wanted to eat all the time. There is nothing else to do but eat!
Admittedly, the views are spectacular. Pristine forests, mountains to the sea, sailboats, fishing boats, whales and smaller sea mammals, little town ports, glaciers, and other authentically northwestern coastline sights. See the accompanying page, (Menu above,) for some of the photos I took of this place.
I am spending the weekend at Denali National Park. Tomorrow, I begin my trip back home in the RV. My excitement rises, as this well may be a trip of a lifetime through Canada. Bookmark this page — you won’t want to miss anything!
