As part two of three in a series of French Polynesian islands, this post highlights more of the Society Island archipelago. Located in the South Pacific Ocean, the Society Islands consist of 14 islands stretching in a relatively straight line, much like the Hawaiian Islands. In the last post, we viewed Tahiti Island, the capital and most populated. Today, we will see the islands of Huahine, Bora Bora, Taha’a and Moorea.
These islands have a strong connection with the sea. Most of the past and present populations settled near the shore. (Note: It is inadvisable to trek into the interiors without experienced, local guides.) Even the sacred and communal maraes are located seaside. For the traveler, beaches and pristine ocean and lagoon waters on each are attractive.
It is difficult to choose one atoll, motu, or island of this island chain as a favorite. Perhaps these videos can help you decide. If not, try to see them all!
