Kawika retired in blissful solitude, hit the road, and wanted to share his travels with friends and family.
I landed on Maui, one of the beautiful islands in the state of Hawaii, on 2018-03-18. I lodged at the Maui Kai mini-resort (pool/bbq area, jr. suites on the water, kitchens, washer-dryer down the hall, two places down from where I honeymooned at Mom and Dad’s timeshare in Papakea, the Kaanapali area near historical Lahaina. (Though I didn’t realize that when I booked. It is a small world after all!). Maui Kai is right on the water, and it was nice to hear the ocean waves every night.
One day, I walked all the way to Lahaina and back. A travel magazine named Front Street in Lahaina as one of the top-ten best streets to walk down in the U.S. The scene is oceanfront, art shops, history, weather, restaurants, and of course, t-shirts, in this old whaling port.
All in all, Lahaina/Kaanapali/Maui Kai is a great area for walking. A real boardwalk leads from just outside my hotel, through parks, past nice resorts (restaurant/shopping/coffee/activities,) all the way to white-sand beaches. One of the best (and free!) things to do on vacation is people-watching, of course.
There are places to see on Maui as well. The Road to Hana, with its odd-ball attractions, waterfalls, and tropical island views on the curvy (sometimes one-way) road. A Luau, like the Grand Luau at Honua’ula, Wailea, or Old Lahaina Luau. Pigs cooked in the ground a run for their money!
Finally, as I am on the lookout for a new home, I spent a little time nosing around some neighborhoods by car and by foot. I even saw my ideal house on the shore(for only $7.9 million dollars!) Realistically though, not all houses here are that expensive $$$$. The prices I have seen are comparable, or slightly cheaper, than the same amount of house in the Oakland hills. I am keeping my eyes and mind open.
