Again visiting Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, we will be looking at the picturesque area known as Horseshoe Bend in today’s short three-minute video. Located just five miles downstream from Lake Powell, and minutes from the city of Page, Arizona, it is worth the side trip when you visit this area. When I went in Apil during the middle of the day, the parking lot (with a minimal fee) was half full, but the viewpoint wasn’t overly crowded. It’s a flat and easy walk from the lot.

The view, though, is spectacular and symbolic of the Colorado River as it carves its way through red sandstone, much like it has done in the Grand Canyon. Over the ages of sedimentation, tectonic uplifts, and erosion, a meander bent the river into this perfect shape of a horseshoe.

Horseshoes are said to bring you luck. In the case of Horseshoe Bend, the luck was all good.
