Last post, we saw the exterior of Hearst Castle, a monument of a place on the Central Coast of California. Today’s post covers the ground and first floors of the largest house at Hearst Castle.

First, there is the Kitchen area, which is the epitome of a state-of-the-art kitchen of the 1930s. Large ovens, industrial-size refrigeration, wine and beer dispensers, and mixers treated Hearst and his guests to lavish dinners served on fine china. Lucky guests, many who were celebrities from Hollywood, were entertained in Gathering Places on the first floor of the Castle. During their stay, guests often used the indoor Roman pool, where they might see diving queen Esther Williams launch from the diving platform into the crystalline, mosaic-decorated, waters.

Next post, we will see the less-often toured parts of Hearst Castle, including the private rooms upstairs. Stay tuned.
