Arrondissements and Gothic churches tell the well-rounded story of Paris, France. First of all, “arrondissement” in French means “rounding.” It describes the shape of the 20 arrondissements, or districts, of Paris. Moreso, it differentiates the unique culture and history of Parisian neighborhoods. For example, the Temple Arrondissement (3rd,) is known for its Marais neighborhood’s Middle Age buildings (hotels-particuliers,) as well as the Picasso Museum holding his modern era masterpieces. Different characteristics define every arrondissement, pieces of the puzzle that make up the picture of Paris.

Gothic churches are the other half of this story of Paris, the birthplace of Gothic Architecture. Some of the best Gothic architecture and church buildings are in this city. The newly-restored Notre Dame is one of them, of course. Flying buttresses, for instance, an architectural invention to support walls, create a truly spectacular space within. However much I love the interior of Notre Dame, the gargoyles climbing the walls outside the entrance always make me smile!

One cannot see everything of Paris in a day. But, to achieve a more-“rounded” view of what Paris offers the traveler, you must visit many of the different arrondissements and experience the culture and uniqueness in its neighborhoods. Paris is one of the great “melting pot” cities of the world. Bon appetit!
