Did you know there is a museum half a block from Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Denmark, that could add cultural education to your children’s amusement park entertainment visit? Seriously, the museum’s name is the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. The founders, (the Carl Jacobsen family of Carlsberg brewery fame,) chose the name Glyptotek because in Greek it means glypto– “to carve, sculpture,” and theke – “repository.” It describes the museum beautifully.
On the ground floor of the Glyptotek, you find a vast collection of sculptures on both sides of an atrium. The atrium, close-by cafe and gift shop provide a reason to sit, relax, and enjoy the museum’s fascinating architecture by itself. But — please explore further. Extensions and additions to the original building have grown museum spaces that house, for example, Ancient Egyptian artifacts, Romanesque busts, and Danish artwork from the 19th C. on.
Children on summer break may not consider a visit to a museum as a “vacation!” However, when they are done running around Tivoli Gardens, take them to the cool confines of the Glyptotek Museum. It’s a trip both kids and adults will find interesting and relaxing. Heck, you might even love it!
